  Introduction to Haidian Park

The western suburb where the Haidian Park locates was renowned for its many springs and streams in ancient times, with a resemblance of the picturesque south China and the northern-frontier oasis. In the past, many poets and literary men in old Beijing city explored the territory, creating many well-known poems. The great calligrapher and painter Wen Zhengming in Ming Dynasty once remarked: “The beautiful green hills and the freely flying birds make everything even more like that of south China.” Built on the site of the former imperial garden Chang Chun Yuan (Garden of Eternal Spring) and spanning Chang Chun Yuan, West Garden, Springs Temples, etc, Haidian Park inherited natural beauty and charms from all these gardens.

Located on the bank of Wanquan River in the fourth ring, Haidian Park is a peaceful and graceful place that integrates nature, culture and fashion. The park was constructed in April, 2003 and opened to the public in September the same year. It was one of the 60 issues the authority in Haidian district promised to fulfill in 2003.

In 2007 and 2010, Haidian Bureau of Landscape and Forestry successively improved the park and its facilities on a large scale. Their efforts made it possible for the Haidian Park to function better and be more splendid. By virtue of its fine view endowed by nature, the park draws millions of citizens coming around to enjoy themselves every year. Besides, it has also become a base for popular science education and a venue for a series of characteristic cultural activities.

Covering an area of approximately 34 hectares, the park’s green area reaches about 20 hectares and its water area about 2.8 hectares. The garden plant resources here are abundant, with 75 kinds of seedlings totaling over 600,000, like cedars, Chinese pines, toons, silk trees, ginkgos, flowering peaches, etc. The park is composed of eight main attractions: Taoyuan Study, Wanquan Spring, Danling Lake, Twin Bridge, Imperial Rice Field, Crops-Viewing Pavilion, Dew-Collecting Terrace, and Flower Valley and service establishments: Children’s Playground, Sports Center, and Qixin Teahouse.

Haidian Park, melting the beauty of the scenery, collecting the fineness of the nature and integrating the glory of human beings, is to create a habitat for the mind and soul.
